Mateo Lugo is a guitarist, composer and improviser engaging in algorithmic and poetic procedures to seize unconventional sounds and configurations. He’s made scores out of a busy highway, the unpredictable patterns in shore surf and the ephemeral translations of a dancing body.

His musical studies took him to Berklee College of Music where he earned a double major in Jazz Composition and Guitar Performance. There, his composition “Monkey Rum” was selected to be part of Berklee’s Jazz Revelation Records label.

He later received a Masters in Composition at Mills College in Oakland, California where he studied closely with Zeena Parkins, Fred Frith, and Willie Winant. He was awarded the Elizabeth Mill Crothers award for outstanding composition.

Professionally, Lugo has written and performed original music for modern dance productions at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, and at Kampnagel in Hamburg, Germany.

He has also composed soundtracks for indie video games. He wrote the score for the critically acclaimed game “Reigns”, one of the Top 5 games of 2016 on the App Store and the Play Store. And collaborated multiple times with award-winning composer Disasterpiece.

More recently, Paris-based experimental label Arcade Majeure released two of his electronic ambient pieces he composed using stochastic processes.
